What are the ordinal numbers in French?
The ordinal number are: Premier/première (first), deuxième (second), troisième (third), quatrième (fourth) and cinquième (fifth). To form the ordinal number in French add “ième” to the basic number. For example, trois + ième = troisième, or third. You will find a complete list of the ordinal numbers in French further down this page.

Examples of French ordinal numbers
- C’est ma première fois en France. It’s my first time to France.
- Elle est arrivée en première place. She arrived in the first place.
- Matthieu est premier de la classe. Matthieu is first in his class.
- C’est la cinquième fois qu’il me raconte cette histoire. It’s the fifth time he’s told me this story.
How to form the French ordinal numbers
The basic rule to form ordinal numbers is to add ième to the cardinal number. For example:
- trois -> troisième (third)
- six -> sixième (sixth)
- vingt-et-un -> vingt et unième (21st)
Premier (first) is treated like and adjective and must agree with the noun it modifies:
- le premier jour d’école The firs day of school
- ma première voiture My first car
- les premiers Américains The first Americans
- les premières nations The first nations
Here are the masculine and feminine forms of premier/première (first). Use ‘premier’ for the first of the month.
- le premier janvier – > January 1st
- mon premier chien -> my first dog
- ma première fois -> my first time
Both fifth, ninth and tenth have spelling changes (in bold):
- cinq -> cinquième
- neuf -> neuvième
- dix -> dizième
The -e gets dropped when the cardinal number ends in -e.
- quatre -> quatrième
- onze -> onzième
- trente – > trentième
There are several ways to write these numbers: e, ème or °. A small -e can be added as well. Examples using deuxième:
