The French expression “être comme cul et chemise” translates directly to: “to be like backside and shirt”.

English meaning:

  • be as thick as thieves
  • to be intimate, closely allied

French meaning:

  • très bien s’entendre avec quelqu’unto get along very well with somebody

Example sentence:

  • Mon meilleur ami et moi, on est comme cul et chemise: on passe tout notre temps ensemble. My best friend and I are very close. We spend all our time together.


A synonym adjective is simply “tres proche” or very close.

  • Marie et sa meulleure amie sont très proches. Marie and her best friend are very close.
