How To Use “Peuplé” (Populted) In French

Today’s lesson explains how to pronounce and use the adjective peuplé, which means “populated” or “densely populated”. We also include an example sentence using la population (population).

Peuplé - French adjective meaning populated or densely populated.

Example sentences

For this first sentence, l’état le moins peuplé (the least populated state) is an example of the French superlative (the most, the least, etc.). Students often have a difficult time with the pronunciation of the United States in French: Les États-Unis.

Le Wyoming est l’état le moins peuplé des États-Unis.

Wyoming is the least populated state in the United States.

For this second sentence, note that pays (country) has two syllables: pays or “pay-ee”.

La Chine et l’Inde sont les pays les plus peuplés du monde.

China and India are the most populated countries in the world.

This final sentence includes the year 2024. Students often have hard time with years in French, which we explain in this lesson.

Selon Wikipedia, la population de la France a atteint soixante-huit million en deux mille vingt-quatre.

According to Wikipédia, the population of France reached 68 million in 2024.

Additional notes

  • The masculine noun le peuple refers to the people or population of a country or region. For example, le peuple a choisi (the people have chosen).
  • Peu peuplé means “sparsely populated” while très peuple means “densely populated”.
  • In the case of France, les Français refers to “French people” or “the French”.
