Reconnaissant Meaning, Pronunciation and Examples
📘 Reconnaissant meaning
Reconnaissant is an adjective meaning “grateful,” “thankful,” or “appreciative” in French. The form changes depending on the subject: reconnaissant (masculine) and reconnaissante (feminine). It’s actually the present participle of the verb reconnaître. In older French, reconnaître also meant “to acknowledge a favor,” not just “to recognize.” So, reconnaissant originally meant “recognizing someone’s kindness” — which is how it came to mean “grateful” in modern French.
🎧 Reconnaissant pronunciation
The adjective reconnaissant (masculine) is pronounced /ʁəkɔnɛsɑ̃/ — roughly ruh-koh-neh-sahn.
The feminine form reconnaissante is pronounced /ʁəkɔnɛsɑ̃t/ — roughly ruh-koh-neh-sahnt.
