Car rentals in France can be very daunting, especially when dealing with different rules and regulations. Here you’ll find a list of French phrases for renting a car. What makes things really scary in Europe is you’ll often be forced to rent a car with manual transmission!

Useful phrases

  • Je voudrais louer une voiture. I’d like to rent a car.
  • Avez-vous des voitures disponibles? Do you have any cars available?
  • Avez-vous une voiture automatique? Do you have an automatic?
  • Je ne sais pas conduire une voiture avec la boîte manuelle. I don’t know how to drive a manual transmission.
  • Donnez-mois une petite voiture, s’il vous plaît. Give me an economy car, please.
  • Je prends la voiture pour cinq jours. I’ll take the car for five days.
  • Je prends la voiture pour une semaine. I’ll take the car for one week.
  • Puis-je déposer la voiture le week-end? May I drop off the car on the weekends?
  • Est-ce que le kilométrage est compris? Is the mileage included?
  • Dois-je faire le plein avant de rendre la voiture? Do I have to fill the tank before dropping the car off?
  • Ça coûte combien par kilomètre? How much per km?
  • Je prends la voiture ici et je la rends à Lyon. I’m picking the car up here and dropping it off in Lyon.
  • L’assurance avec tous risques, s’il vous plaît. Full insurance, please.
  • C’est combien, la caution? How much is the deposit?
  • Voici mon permis de conduire international. Here’s my international drivers license.
  • Voici ma carte de crédit. Here’s my credit card.
  • Avez-vous un un réhausseur intégral? Do you have a booster seat?
  • Avez-vous un un siège enfant? Do you have a child seat?
  • Avez-vous un siège pour bébés? Do you have a baby seat?
  • Est-ce que la voiture a un GPS? Does the car have a GPS?
  • Est-ce que cette voiure prend l’essence ou du gazole? Does this car take gas or diesel?

Useful vocabulary

  • une voiture moyenne/une grande voiture a medium-sized/large-sized car
  • une voiture compacte a compact car
  • un quatre-quatre a 4×4
  • une voiture de luxe a luxury car
