Avoir l'estomac dans les talons - French expression meaning to be very hungry, famished

Example sentences

Je n’ai pas mangé depuis ce matin et il est déjà 18h00. J’ai l’estomac dans les talons !

I haven’t eaten since this morning and it’s already 6pm. I’m famished!

This second example sentence has a si (if) clause using the futur simple tense. The structure is: si + clause in present tense, then clause in future tense. I explain this in my lesson covering the future tense. The preposition vers can translate to “towards” or “around”.

Si tu ne prends pas ton petit-déjeuner, tu aura l’estomac dans les talons vers 11h.

If you don’t have your breakfast you’ll be starving around 11am.
