The French Word of the Day is d’ici, an expression meaning “by” or “from now until.” A lot of students skip d’ici because they see “ici” and think only of “here,” when in reality it has a totally different meaning. With my clear audio examples, you’ll quickly understand exactly how to use this word in everyday conversation.

📘 D’ici meaning

D’ici has two meanings in French. When it comes before a time word, d’ici means “from now until…”, “between now and…”, or simply “by + time word”. For example, d’ici demain (by tomorrow) or d’ici un mois (within one month). The expression is literally de (from) + ici (here), and it can also describe physical distance — how far something is from where you are standing. Je le vois d’ici (I can see it from here).
