Today we’ll look at an extremely useful word which very few students think to ask how to say: en ligne, which means “online”.

Word origin

The French preposition en (in) is “in” in Latin. The French word ligne (line) is linea in Latin. Hence, en ligne in Latin would be in linea.

Example sentences

This first example sentence uses the personal pronoun on. This pronoun translates literally to “one” but is used to mean “we”, “you” or “people” in general in French. This lesson on our site covers on in detail.

Pensez-vous qu’on puisse trouver le vrai amour en ligne ?

Do you think you can find true love online?

Puisse is the verb pouvoir (can, to be able) conjugated in the subjunctive mood. The subjunctive is used for expressing wishes, emotions and doubts.

The noun achat translates to “purchase” and is related to the verb acheter (to buy).

Martin fait tous ses achats en ligne.

Martin makes all of his purchases online.

In this next sentence, nous faisons is the first-person plural form of faire (to make, to do).

Nous faisons la réservation en ligne.

We are making the reservation online.

In this next sentence, français (French) is preceded by the definite aritcle, le (the). In French, when referring to langauge names in the context of learning or studying, they must always be preceded by le.

J’apprends le français en ligne.

I’m learning French online.
