In today’s lesson we’ll look at a basic yet essential feminine noun voiture, which means “car”. Tu aimes ma voiture ? (Do you like my car?).

Word origin

The Modern French feminine noun voiture (car, automobile) comes from the Latin vectura (action of transporting), which is derived from vectus, the past participle of the Latin verb vehere (to ride, to bear, to carry). The English word “vehicle” is also related to vehere.

Pronunciation

The pronunciation of voiture (car) in French is: vwah-tur or [vwa-tyʀ].

Example Sentences

Oh là là ! Tu as une belle voiture!

Wow! you have a nice car!

For this second example il y a can translate to “there is” and “there are”. Trop de means “too much” or “too many”.

Il y a trop de voitures au centre-ville.

There are too many cars downtown.

This final example sentence uses venir (to come) de + infinitive, which is an example of the recent past tense to mean “just”. The expressions tout neuf (masculine) and toute neuve (feminine) mean “brand new”.

Je viens d’acheter une voiture toute neuve !

I just bought a brand new car!
