Copain / copine – French word for friend, example sentence "Ils sont copains !" – French Word of the Day

📘 Copain, copine meaning

In French, un copain simply means “a (male) friend,” but mon copain almost always means “my boyfriend.” The exact same applies to the feminine forms une copine and ma copine. As a French learner, it’s important that you understand this because native speakers are always keenly aware of this little nuance.

🎧 Copain, copine pronunciation

  • Copain: /kɔ.pɛ̃/ in IPA or “koh-panh”.
  • Copine: /kɔ.pin/ in IPA “koh-peen”.

📝 French and English examples

Copain, copine – friend

J’ai beaucoup de copains à Paris.
I have a lot of friends in Paris.

Les copains viennent dîner ce soir.
My friends are coming over for dinner tonight.

ℹ️ Note: This is a loose translation. Les copains is a casual way of saying “my friends” — almost like “the gang.”

👇 These next two sentences show the nuance between une copine (a friend) and ma copine (my girlfriend). The meaning depends entirely on context and tone.

Elle s’appelle Julie. C’est une copine.
Her name is Julie. She’s a friend.

Elle s’appelle Julie. C’est ma copine.
Her name is Julie. She’s my girlfriend.
