Word origin

The Modern French verb exprimer comes from exprimere in Latin. The English words ‘expression’ and ‘to express’ have the same origin.

Exprimer example sentences

Les membres de la famille expriment facilement leurs sentiments.

The members of the family express their feelings easily.

For this first sentence, we also could have used the translation ‘to show their emotions’. This word of the day lesson covers famille (family).


L’artiste exprime ses émotions à travers les couleurs sombres et intenses.

The artist expresses his (or her) emotions though dark and intense colors.

The preposition à travers can translation to ‘through’, ‘by’ and ‘by way of’.


Georges s’exprime très facilment en français et ne cherche plus ses mots.

Georges expresses himself very easily in French and no longer looks for his words.

This example sentence uses the advanced negation form ne…plus, which means ‘no longer’ or ‘anymore’.
