Level B1 (Lower Intermediate)

The Word of the Day is notamment, meaning “including” and “especially.” This is an excellent slightly advanced adverb for your B1 conversations. More importantly, we’ll also contrast notamment with surtout, which also means “especially.”

Notamment – Including, especially – French Word of the Day

📘 Notamment meaning in French

Notamment is an adverb meaning “including”, “in particular”, or “especially” in French. You use it to highlight one or more examples from a larger group. For example, “J’aime le chocolat, notamment le chocolat noir” means “I like chocolate, including dark chocolate” — dark chocolate is simply one example, not the only kind of chocolate you like.

💡 Notamment vs. surtout

Notamment means “including / in particular” and is used to give examples from a larger group. Surtout means “especially / above all” and highlights what matters most or what you prefer the most.

J’aime les fruits, notamment les mangues.
I like fruit, including mangoes.
J’aime les fruits, surtout les mangues.
I like fruit, especially mangoes.

🎧 Notamment pronunciation in French

The pronunciation of notamment is /nɔ.ta.mɑ̃/ (IPA), which sounds roughly like “noh-tah-mahn.”
