Each lesson explains the lyrics with English translations, grammar notes, and vocabulary explanations to help students learn French through music. Many lessons also include native French audio by Marie Assel Cambier.
These are ten of the most famous French love songs of all time. The list includes classic songs about romance, heartbreak, desire, devotion, and lost love. Each of these lessons includes an English translation and detailed explanations of the vocabulary and grammar used in the lyrics. Many lessons also include select lines read aloud by a native French speaker.
1. La Vie en rose
La Vie en rose (1945) is Édith Piaf’s signature song and perhaps the most famous French love song of all time. Its lyrics describe how falling in love can completely transform the way a person sees the world.
2. Ne me quitte pas
Released in 1959, Ne me quitte pas is Jacques Brel’s most famous song and one of the best-known French breakup songs ever written. The lyrics take the form of a desperate plea to a lover who is leaving.
3. Hymne à l’amour
Hymne à l’amour (1950) is one of Édith Piaf’s most moving songs and a passionate declaration of unconditional love. Piaf wrote it for boxer Marcel Cerdan, the great love of her life.
4. Je t’aime… moi non plus
Je t’aime… moi non plus (1969), performed by Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin, is one of the most famous and controversial French love songs ever recorded. The sensual duet explores desire and the complicated emotions of an intense relationship.
5. Pour que tu m’aimes encore
Pour que tu m’aimes encore (1995) is one of Céline Dion’s most famous French-language songs. Written by Jean-Jacques Goldman, the lyrics describe a woman determined to win back the person she loves.

6. Je l’aime à mourir
Je l’aime à mourir (1979) is Francis Cabrel’s signature song and one of the most beloved French romantic ballads of all time. Its poetic lyrics describe loving someone with complete and overwhelming devotion.
7. Et si tu n’existais pas
Et si tu n’existais pas (1975) is one of Joe Dassin’s most famous and enduring love songs. The singer imagines how empty and meaningless his life would be without the person he loves.
8. La Bohème
La Bohème (1965) is Charles Aznavour’s signature song and one of the greatest classics of French chanson. Its nostalgic lyrics look back on youth, poverty, art, and love in the Montmartre neighborhood of Paris.
9. Je te promets
Je te promets (1986) is one of Johnny Hallyday’s most famous romantic songs. Written by Jean-Jacques Goldman, the lyrics are built around a series of passionate promises made to a loved one.
10. Le temps de l’amour
Le temps de l’amour (1962) is one of Françoise Hardy’s best-known songs and a defining classic of 1960s French pop. Its lyrics celebrate youth, romance, friendship, and the carefree feeling of falling in love.
