Quand même is a highly versatile French adverbial phrase with many meanings including: still, anyway, anyhow, even so, all the same, really and not really. It commonly heard in spoken French and has a very wide range of usages.

Quand même combines the words quand [kɑ̃], meaning “when” and même [mɛm], meaning both “same” and “even”.

Example sentences

For these first three examples, quand même is used to highlight the difference between two main points.

Elle est gentille, mais quand même, elle m’énerve de temps en temps !

She is nice, but still, she gets on my nerves from time to time.

Je suis prof, et je fais quand même des fautes pendant les leçons !

I am a teacher, and yet I sometimes make mistakes during the lessons.

For these next two examples, ne + quand même + pas is used to express objection of an idea that’s beyond acceptable limits.

Je ne vais quand même pas marcher une heure dans le froid !

I’m not going to walk one hour in the cold!

Tu n’as quand même pas oublié ton portable ?

You didn’t forget your cell phone, did you?

This usage of quand même is to express disbelief or skepticism. For this sentence, the understood meaning really is “Tell me you’re not going to…”.

Tu ne vas pas apprendre tous les mots en un jour, quand même ?

You aren’t going to learn all the words in one day, aren’t you?

Another usage of quand même is to express surprise or astonishment.

Ah ouai, quand même ! C’est dingue !

Wow! That is surprisingly crazy!

In spoken French, you ‘ll often hear merci quand même (thanks anyway).
