Level A2 (Upper Beginner)
Lesson written by French teacher David Issokson for students who want to learn French online, with native audio by Marie Assel Cambier, a voice artist from France.
The French Word of the Day is saumon fumé, meaning “smoked salmon,” one of the most popular delicacies and holiday foods served in France. I’ll never forget how it was served exquisitely with blinis, lemon, and crème fraîche when I lived with a French host family in 1991–92. In this lesson, we’ll dive into saumon fumé, including its pronunciation with Marie’s native audio examples.

📘 Saumon fumé meaning
Saumon fumé means “smoked salmon” in French. It refers to salmon that is cured (usually with salt, sometimes sugar) and then gently smoked to give it a rich, savory flavor. In French cuisine, saumon fumé is a classic delicacy, most often served as an appetizer, especially during holidays like Christmas and New Year’s. It is commonly eaten on toasts or blinis, with lemon, crème fraîche, or in salads, and is appreciated for its smooth texture and refined taste.
Note: In English, lox is sometimes confused with smoked salmon, but they are different products. Lox is cured but not smoked, while saumon fumé is smoked.
🎧 Saumon fumé pronunciation in French
The pronunciation of saumon fumé is /somɔ̃ fyme/ (IPA), which sounds roughly like “soh-mohn foo-MAY”. Pronunciation tips for saumon fumé:
Saumon:
➔ The au sounds like oh (not aw).
➔ The on is nasal: let the sound resonate through your nose (soh-mohn, without a hard n).
➔ The final n is silent.
Fumé
➔ The u is the French u /y/: round your lips as if saying oo, but say ee.
➔ The final é is a clear ay sound (like in café), not uh or ee.
