Yaourt – Yogurt – French Word of the Day

📘 Yaourt meaning

Yaourt means “yogurt” in French and comes from a Turkish-origin word (yoğurt). Because it’s a borrowed term, French kept an unusual pronunciation pattern — including the pronounced final -t. Today, yaourt simply refers to any kind of yogurt, whether plain, flavored, stirred, or eaten at breakfast or as a light dessert.

🎧 Yaourt pronunciation

The pronunciation of yaourt in French is /ja.uʁt/ — roughly yah-oor-t. In French, yaourt breaks two traditional reading rules: The final -t is pronounced even though final consonants are usually silent when a word ends in two consonants, and au does not behave like in aussi (also) — instead there is a clear syllable break, ya-ourt, with two distinct vowel sounds (a + ou).

📝 Yaourt example sentences

Je mange un yaourt tous les matins.

Ce yaourt est trop sucré à mon goût.

Tu préfères le yaourt nature ou aux fruits ?
Do you prefer plain yogurt or fruit yogurt?

Il reste un yaourt dans le frigo si tu veux.
