Sortir — Meaning and Pronunciation
Sortir is a very common irregular French verb meaning “to go out,” “to leave,” or “to come out.” Its exact meaning depends on the construction used. You’ll often see sortir de (to leave/come out of), sortir avec quelqu’un (to go out with/date someone), and the reflexive expression s’en sortir (to get through/manage).
The IPA pronunciation of sortir is /sɔʁ.tiʁ/, which sounds approximately like “sor-teer.”
Example Sentences
Je ne me sens pas bien et je ne sors pas de la maison aujourd’hui.
I don’t feel well and I’m not going out of the house today.
Il fait mauvais, cependant je sors me promener.
The weather is bad, yet I’m going out for a walk.
Martin et Julie sortent ensemble depuis trois ans.
Martin and Julie have been going out together for three years.
