Davantage — Meaning, Pronunciation, and Examples in French

Level: B1 (Intermediate)

The French Word of the Day is davantage. At first glance it looks like the English word “advantage”, but it’s actually a faux ami (false cognate). In French, davantage means more and is a slightly more formal synonym for plus.

Davantage – more – French Word of the Day

📘 Davantage meaning

Davantage means “more” in French. It’s a slightly more formal alternative to plus and is often used in writing or polite conversation. For example, il faut étudier davantage (you need to study more). Use this adverb when you want to express something done to a greater degree, for longer, or in larger quantity.

🎧 Davantage pronunciation

Davantage is pronounced /da.vɑ̃.taʒ/ in IPA. It sounds like da-vahn-tahzh. The an is nasal (as in français), and the final -ge is /ʒ/, like the “s” in measure.
