The French Word of the Day is être en train de. This grammatical expression is used to talk about actions happening right now — the equivalent of the English “-ing” form (to be doing something). For example, Je suis en train de chanter means “I’m singing,” as in “that’s what I’m doing right now.” This structure is essential for sounding natural and fluent in everyday French. Être en train de – To be in the middle of – French Word of the Day

📘 Être en train de meaning

Être en train de means “to be in the process of” or “to be in the middle of” doing something. It’s used to emphasize that an action is happening right now. The structure is être (conjugated) + en train de + infinitive verb. For example, Je suis en train d’étudier means “I’m studying” — literally “I’m in the process of studying.”

While the simple present j’étudie can mean both “I study” and “I’m studying,” you use être en train de when you want to stress that you are in the middle of carrying out the action.

Je suis en train d’étudier → happening now, my current activity
J’étudie → I study / I’m studying / I do study → more in a general sense
Je suis étudiant → wrong → do not use present participle to convey present progressive in French
