Level A1 (Beginner)

The French Word of the Day is Noël, meaning “Christmas.” Over the past ten years of teaching French, I’ve noticed two very common mistakes students make with Noël: one related to pronunciation and the other to article usage. I’ll walk you through both of these today with clear explanations and examples. You’ll especially love Marie’s audio examples. Joyeux Noël — Merry Christmas!

📘 Noël meaning

Noël means “Christmas” in French and refers to the holiday celebrated on December 25, commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ. The word comes from the Latin natalis, meaning “birth.” In everyday French, Noël appears in common expressions such as joyeux Noël (Merry Christmas) and in well-known traditions like le sapin de Noël (Christmas tree), le Père Noël (Santa Claus), and la bûche de Noël (Yule log cake). Noël and Noëlle (the feminine form) are also used as given names, traditionally associated with children born during the Christmas season.

⚠️ Common mistake with Noël

A frequent mistake among learners is wanting to add the definite article le before Noël, since many French nouns normally require an article. However, Noël does not take a definite article when referring to the holiday itself. You therefore do not say le Noël.

Je passe le Noël à Paris.I’m spending Christmas in Paris.
Je passe Noël à Paris.I’m spending Christmas in Paris.

(An article can appear in specific expressions like le jour de Noël, but not when Noël stands alone as the name of the holiday.)

🎧 Noël pronunciation in French

The pronunciation of Noël is /nɔ.ɛl/ (IPA), which sounds roughly like “no-EL.”

Pronunciation tips for Noël:
➔ Pronounce two clear syllables: No-ël. It is a common mistake for students to pronounce Noël as “nol.”
➔ The ë forces a syllable break, so the e is fully pronounced. The two dots above the -e is called le tréma (diaeresis). See also: French accent marks.
➔ The l is pronounced clearly at the end.
➔ Stress naturally falls on the second syllable: no-EL.
