Today we’ll look at the conjunction pour que, which translates to “so that” and “in order that”. Pour que requires the use of the subjunctive, which you’ll see in the example sentences below.

Example sentences

This first sentence is in the passé composé.

Sylvie a tout planifié pour que nous puissions passer un bon week-end.

Sylvie planned everything so that we can have a nice weekend.

For this sentence, the verb profiter can translate to “to enjoy” or “to take advantage of”.

Thomas finit le projet en avance pour qu’il puisse profiter du beau temps.

Thomas is finishing the project early so that he can enjoy the nice weather.

While beaucoup means “a lot”, I translated to je travaille beaucoup to “I work hard”.

Je travaille beaucoup pour que les leçons soient utiles.

I work hard so that the lessons are useful.
