Puisque — Meaning, pronunciation and examples with audio

Today’s French word of the day is the B1 conjunction puisque, meaning both “since” and “as”. For example, “Puisque vous ne venez pas, je rentre chez moi” (I’m going home since you’re not coming).

Puisque – since, as – French Word of the Day

📘 Puisque meaning

Puisque is a French conjunction meaning “since,” “as,” or “given that.” It introduces a reason or cause that is already known, obvious, or accepted by both the speaker and listener. Unlike parce que (because), which gives new information, puisque refers to something already established. It is commonly used in everyday conversation to justify actions, make suggestions, or add a slightly persuasive or logical tone.

🎧 Puisque pronunciation

The pronunciation of puisque is /pɥisk/ (IPA), which sounds roughly like “pweesk”.

📝 Puisque examples

Puisque vous êtes là, on peut commencer la fête !
We can start the party since you’re here!

Tu peux rentrer chez toi puisque tu ne te sens pas bien.
You can go home since you’re not feeling well.

Puisque j’écris très vite, j’ai déjà fini mes devoirs.
I already finished my homework as I write very quickly.

Puisqu‘il est en très bonne santé, il s’est s’est rétabli vite.
He got better fast as he’s in very good health.

💡 Puisque and vu que both mean “since” and introduce a known or obvious reason. However, puisque is neutral and works in both speech and writing, while vu que is more informal and mainly used in spoken French.
