Example sentences

In addition to la salle de sport, sometimes French speakers use the anglicism le gym. Hence, aller au gym. The French also sometimes simply say aller à la salle for “to go to the gym”.

Jean-Luc va à la salle de sport quatre fois par semaine.

Jean-Luc goes to the gym three times per week.

For this second sentence, faire de la musculation can translate to weightlifting or body building. The term for weights or dumbbells is les haltères (masculine noun). The preposition pour + infinitive means for or “in order to”.

Les gens vont à la salle pour faire de la musculation.

People go to the gym to do bodybuilding.
