Regular -IR verbs are the second most common group of French verbs. In the infinitive form, they end in -ir. To conjugate them, you remove the -ir and add a special set of endings.

How to Conjugate Regular -IR Verbs

Take the verb finir (to finish). The stem is fin-. The endings are:

  • je -is
  • tu -is
  • il/elle/on -it
  • nous -issons
  • vous -issez
  • ils/elles -issent

👉 Example with finir (to finish):

  • je finis
  • tu finis
  • il/elle/on finit
  • nous finissons
  • vous finissez
  • ils/elles finissent

💡 Tip: Focus on the Sounds

Regular -IR verbs can feel a bit trickier than -ER verbs because of the extra letters.
👉 Focus on the sounds, not just the spelling — it makes them easier to master.

Take finir (to finish). The stem is fin-. Say it aloud, then add the endings:

  • je fin + isfinis
  • tu fin + isfinis
  • il/elle/on fin + itfinit
  • nous fin + issonsfinissons
  • vous fin + issezfinissez
  • ils/elles fin + issentfinissent

A fun memory trick: for ils/elles finissent, think of lots of geese flying — it sounds like “fin-eese”!
