💡Ça m’est égal vs peu importe — What’s the difference?

Peu importe is probably the closest common expression to “ça m’est égal”, especially in everyday French.

However, the two expressions are not 100% interchangeable. Ça m’est égal is more personal and is typically used when talking about your own preferences between choices, similar to saying “I don’t mind” or “either is fine with me”. Peu importe is broader and more flexible, and often means “it doesn’t matter”, “no matter”, or “regardless of”.

On mange italien ou chinois ? — Ça m’est égal.
Should we eat Italian or Chinese? — I don’t mind.
On mange italien ou chinois ? — Peu importe.
Should we eat Italian or Chinese? — Whatever / it doesn’t matter.

But only “peu importe” easily works before nouns and clauses:

Peu importe le prix, je veux un bon ordinateur.
No matter the price, I want a good computer.

You would not normally say:

Ça m’est égal le prix.
