Today’s lesson explores a short and fun expression you’d likely hear when staying with a French family: À table ! Translations including “Come and get it!”, “Dinner is served” and “Dinner (or lunch) is ready!”.

Example sentences

This first sentence is in the near future tense, which combines the present tense of aller (to go) with the infinitive to mean “going to”.

À table, les enfants ! On va manger maintenant !

Come and get it, kids! We’re going to eat now!

À table ! Le repas délicieux de maman est prêt !

Come and get it! Mom’s delicious meal is ready!

The expression à table is also used to mean “on the table” when refering to items such as silverware or condiments. Est-ce que means “is” for yes-no questions.
