How to pronounce l’hiver (winter) in French

This lesson examines the masculine noun hiver, which means “winter” in French. The most important point is that the final -r must be pronounced. This is unlike ER verbs in the infinitive form where the final -er sounds like -ay as in (to speak) parler [parl-ay].

Example sentences

To express “I love winter”, hiver must be preceded by the definite article as it’s a noun.

J’adore l’hiver parce que j’adore jouer dans la neige !

I love winter because I love playing in the snow.

To express “in the winter”, use the preposition en. Hence, en hiver.

En hiver je fais du ski et en été je vais à la plage.

In the winter I ski and in the summer I go to the beach.

To express “this winter” use the demonstrative adjective ce and add a liaison -t to make “cet”.

Cet hiver on part en Espagne pour visiter Barcelone.

This winter we’re going to spain to visit Barcelona.
